Berkeley Chamber Board Endorses Statewide Gas Tax

Berkeley Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors endorses a state-wide gas tax to repair and maintain South Carolina deteriorating roads.

The Board supports increasing the gas tax to provide a sustainable and recurring funding source that will enable the Department of Transportation to work on the more than 85% of our state roads that are rated “poor or fair”.

The Berkeley Chamber Board believes that a safe and well maintained infrastructure is critical to a growing economy, along with safety for residents and businesses.

South Carolina has the 4th largest state-maintained road system in the country, while also having the lowest per-mile road funding in the nation. Approximately 1/3 of our primary or federal roads and ½ of our secondary roads have been deemed in “poor” or “mediocre” condition, while SCDOT estimates over a billion dollars per year would be needed 20 years to address the maintenance shortfalls and additional capacity for existing needs and future growth.

The Berkeley Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors supports passing long-term, sustainable transportation funding with the sole purpose of fixing our crumbing roads and bridges and expanding economic corridors.
