(GOOSE CREEK)– The Berkeley County School District (BCSD) named Cane Bay Middle’s Jessica Donaldson and Goose Creek High’s Tim Burgsteiner its 2017 Career and Technical Education (CTE) Teachers of the Year.
“I am very proud of Jessica Donaldson and Tim Burgsteiner,” said Director of Career and Technical Education Tana Lee. “They are outstanding, dedicated, and driven CTE teachers, always searching for ways to expose their students to information and skills that will benefit them. Tomorrow’s jobs will require more knowledge, better skills, and more flexible workers than ever before, and I believe Mrs. Donaldson and Mr. Burgsteiner are equipping our students with exactly what they’ll need to be successful and competitive.
Jessica Donaldson, Cane Bay Middle School
Jessica Donaldson teaches pre-engineering as a Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Instructor at Cane Bay Middle School. She teaches Gateway and Launch curriculum to 5th through 8th grade students. Prior to teaching Gateway, Mrs. Donaldson worked as an Instructional Technologist in BCSD’s Office of Professional Development, and served as an adjunct professor at the College of Charleston. Mrs. Donaldson is the Related Arts Department Chair at Cane Bay Middle, and a member of the Science, Engineering, Technology, Art, and Math Committee. She assisted with the implementation of OneBerkeley Connects, the district’s 1:1 initiative.
“Mrs. Donaldson is one of the finest professionals I have encountered in over 20 years of experience as a teacher and administrator,” said Cane Bay Middle School Principal Dr. Carol Bartlett. “She has an exceptional gift for valuing, welcoming, and fostering relationships. She has the ability to see the bigger picture for school and team improvement.”
Tim Burgsteiner, Goose Creek High School
Tim Burgsteiner has taught welding at Goose Creek High School for the last 22 years. He also has coached football, softball, and track at the school. Before joining Goose Creek High Mr. Burgsteiner served in the United States Army as a Non-Commissioned Officer – Heavy Wheel Vehicle Mechanic; a General Dynamics – Welding Instructor; Pipefitter; Pipe Welder; and Adult Education Welding Instructor at both General Dynamics and BCSD.
“Tim Burgsteiner is a teacher who understands the integration of CTE is imperative,” said Goose Creek High School Principal Jimmy Huskey. “He understands the impact the CTE curriculum can have on learning and everyday life. Mr. Burgsteiner listens to the pulse of the community and tailors his curriculum to benefit his students who are seeking employment after they graduate from high school.”
Mrs. Donaldson and Mr. Burgsteiner will participate in CTE conferences this summer to learn new teaching techniques and gather information that will inform their approach to teaching students. They also will be nominated for Association for Career and Technical Education awards.
