Lowcountry Women’s Specialists is a leader in the tri-county area, pursuing excellence in the delivery of women’s healthcare. With this mission in mind, we have partnered with other South Carolina stakeholders to introduce a proven and innovative model of obstetric healthcare delivery.
After nearly a decade of decline, the U.S. preterm birth rate – the largest contributor to infant death in the country – increased again in 2016 for the second year in a row. According to the March of Dimes, more than 380,000 babies are born prematurely each year. Babies who survive an early birth often face lifelong health problems. The National Academy of Medicine reports that preterm birth accounts for $26 billion annually in avoidable medical and societal costs
Only four states earned an “A” on the 2017 Report Card and South Carolina received a “D” with a preterm birth rate of 11.1%. These issues are compelling for Lowcountry Women’s Specialists (LCWS). LCWS is the leading provider of obstetric care in both Summerville and North Charleston, South Carolina, with over 1300 deliveries in 2017.
CenteringPregnancy® is an evidence-based model of group prenatal care that improves maternal and child health outcomes and reduces health disparities. Data shows improvement in preterm births and breastfeeding rates. Lowcountry Women’s Specialists is collaborating with the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, the March of Dimes, SC Medicaid, and the South Carolina Birth Outcomes Initiative to offer this model of healthcare delivery to our patients in the Spring of 2018.
