Coastal Community Foundation Announces 2017 Barkley Scholar

Rising freshman to recieve a total of $40,000 for four years of college
CHARLESTON, S.C. – August 1, 2017 – Coastal Community Foundation is pleased to announce the 2017 recipient of the Rufus C. Barkley Jr. Leadership Scholarship. The award is a four-year renewable scholarship granted to one applicant annually who demonstrates a strong academic record; a history of community service; and vision, integrity, ethics, leadership and generosity. This year’s recipient is Nafisa Rahimberganova.

The scholarship program was designed to award students who emulate the “integrity, compassion and vitality of this ‘genuine’ man,” and Rahimberganova embodies every one of these characteristics.

She maintained a 4.50 GPA at Charleston County’s Academic Magnet High School and found time to give back to the community, even while managing family hardships, work responsibilities, deadlines and AP course loads. “My parents have sacrificed everything so I could receive a good education and equal rights; and be introduced to this country of prosperity and opportunities,” says Rahimberganova.

She has volunteered with organizations including Pet Helpers, Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry and North Charleston Creative Arts Elementary School where she served as a tutor. She was a sprinter on the Track and Field team and the Co-captain of the Speech and Debate Club among many other student and community activities.

Rahimberganova will attend the University of South Carolina Honors College to major in Biology, and plans to pursue a degree at Columbia Medical School. Emphasizing her passion for helping others, her goal is to become a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon to “help less fortunate kids whose parents cannot afford medical treatment.” She hopes to work with Doctors Without Borders, an organization that delivers medical aid to people affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from healthcare.

About The Rufus C. Barkley Jr. Leadership Scholarship
Prior to Mr. Barkley’s death in 2001, his friends, family and business colleagues started a scholarship fund in his honor. The Rufus C. Barkley Jr. Leadership Scholarship awards promising student leaders with $10,000 per year for four years of college, providing $40,000 in total. A recipient is selected annually from Coastal Community Foundation’s General Scholarship applicant pool who is a resident of Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester, or Colleton county. Financial need may be considered in the selection process, but academic merit and character are the principal criteria for the award. The Fund has awarded 17 scholarships since 2001 totaling almost $400,000 to date.
