May 16, 2017 (GOOSE CREEK)– Today, the Berkeley County School District (BCSD) proudly announces that Devon Forest Elementary School’s Megan Verner is the 2017 District Rookie Teacher of the Year. The announcement was made at the PRIDE Celebration, which is an annual banquet to honor all school-level Rookie Teachers of the Year. Hosted at Westview Middle School, this year’s event was sponsored by Jostens, TE 21, and Kelly Services.
“I am excited, humbled and proud to be Berkeley County School District’s 2017 Rookie Teacher of the Year,” said BCSD’s 2017 Rookie Teacher of the Year Megan Verner. “This year I have learned more than I ever imagined was possible, and I plan to continue learning and growing. I’ll never forget my first year of teaching and this is definitely a wonderful way to end the year.”
The Rookie Teacher of the Year is nominated by his or her school principal based on how the teacher provides and facilitates quality instruction, manages student behavior and classroom, and models professional demeanor and behavior. The Rookie Teacher of the Year criteria also includes:
- Conducting effective instructional planning to meet the needs of all students
- Organizing and implementing a culture of learning in the classroom
- Developing effective relationships with students, parents/guardians and peers
- Serving as an advocate for students and public education as a whole
“Megan works tirelessly to meet the needs of each student, academically and socially,” said Devon Forest Elementary School Principal Cristie Mitchum. “Megan is an advocate for her students; she wants what is in each child’s best interest. Her positive and determined personality has made the most amazing setting for her students at Devon Forest Elementary.”
