Charleston, SC – Kathy Phlegar, the founder and president of Phlegar & Associates, was recently appointed to the SC BIO board of directors and the Blinktbi Inc. board of directors.

SC BIO is a statewide, nonprofit, public and private life sciences industry association and economic development organization formed to actively promote, build, support, expand and convene South Carolina’s life sciences industry. The group is the official state affiliate of BIO, the US Biotechnology Innovation Organization.

“I am thrilled that SC BIO has helped our state recognize the importance of investing in life sciences, and I am equally thrilled that I get to play a role in this new phase of the South Carolina life sciences industry,” said Phlegar, who was appointed to the SC BIO board of directors in June.

Phlegar was also recently asked to serve on the Blinktbi Inc. board of directors.

Based in Charleston, Blinktbi Inc. is the developer of the world’s first patented device to objectively monitor concussions using the blink reflex. The system employs the use of high-speed videography to track the eyelids and measure the blink reflex time, duration and other variables. Using proprietary algorithms, this blink data is compared to the patient’s preliminary, baseline test and a change is indicative of a concussion.

“After seeing the technology that Blinktbi Inc. created, I knew that this was a special organization,” explained Phlegar.

“I’m excited to lend my medical device and informatics expertise to help Blinktbi bring this revolutionary technology to market. I believe this will change the paradigm for concussion detection and management and I am delighted to be a part of the team.”

Phlegar received her bachelor’s degree from Clemson University. She also earned her master’s degree in business administration from the University of Florida. During her time at the University of Florida, Phlegar received an endowed fellowship, was named a Matherly Scholar and was named the American Marketing Association’s Scholar of the Year.

After graduating, Phlegar worked for a Fortune 500 company, progressing through the roles of product manager to division director. In 1995, Phlegar founded Phlegar & Associates, where she is responsible for identifying opportunities for companies through strategy and product development engagements.

“With almost 30 years of experience in business development and analysis, I have the opportunity to provide organizations with solutions to foster growth,” explained Phlegar. “I’m in a unique position as an objective outsider because I can help my clients make adjustments and embrace a new path based on hard data that will prove beneficial to their overall organization.”

In addition to serving on the board of directors for SCBIO and the board of directors for Blinktbi Inc., Phlegar also serves as a deacon at Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church. Most recently, she was a moderator at SCBIO’s annual conference, “Building the Business of Life Sciences in SC,” where she helped facilitate discussions during the conference’s CEO panel.
