July 26, 2017 – East Cooper Medical Center recently led a community effort to provide area children and adults struggling with hunger with a healthy breakfast during the summer through its Healthy Over Hungry® Cereal Drive. This initiative benefitted the Lowcountry Food Bank, a member of the Feeding America network. The drive took place June 2 – June 9th. During a recent Governing Board Meeting, a financial donation was presented to the Lowcountry Food Bank to help with perishable items such as milk and fruit.

It is important to know that 80% of the children in the Lowcountry who participate in the free breakfast and lunch programs through their schools would not get meals provided in the summer. Summer is a particularly difficult time for food banks around the country.

“We appreciate East Cooper Medical Center for hosting the Healthy Over Hungry Cereal Drive and are grateful for all that it does for our community,” said Pat Walker, President and CEO Lowcountry Food Bank. “East Cooper Medical Center has chosen to take action and respond to this community need.”

The hospital has participated in the cereal drive for three years and this year collected 785 lbs. of cereal in June, which equals to 23,200 servings for the children in the Lowcountry.  The hospital also raised $3,070, and combined with Tenet Healthcare’s Challenge Grant of $1,835, a total of $4,905 was donated to the food bank this month.  The donation was presented to Pat Walker, CEO of the Lowcountry Food Bank, at the July Governing Board meeting at East Cooper Medical Center.
