Solar Energy To Illuminate Habitat Restore For Shoppers

Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County’s ReStore is elated to announce the installation of a solar energy system in partnership with Berkeley Electric Cooperative and SuperGreen Solutions of Charleston. The system, consisting of 192 solar panels, will be the first commercial solar system in Berkeley Electric Cooperative’s service area.

“Habitat for Humanity is blessed to be able to have a solar system installed on our facility. To know that we are not only cutting our carbon footprint but also producing almost 90% of the energy we use is very exciting for us. We look forward to working with Daniel and Supergreen Solutions as well as Berkeley Electric Co Op on this project and hope to serve as an example as to what other commercial facilities can do to conserve energy in our state.” -George Druyos

SuperGreen Solutions partnering with Southeast Energy Resources has designed and will be installing a 57.6 kW solar system. In addition to the solar system, SuperGreen Solutions completed a full LED upgrade that will save an additional $400 per month on utility bills and drastically reduce maintenance costs. “This was a challenging project and all the right players had to be in place with Habitat’s best interest in mind to be a success. I’m really proud of what we were able to do.” Daniel Hancock, SuperGreen Solutions.

“Berkeley Electric always recommends that members consider energy efficiency as the first step prior to installing solar panels”, commented Eddie Plowden, Director of Marketing and Energy Services. For example, the ReStore also installed energy efficiency LED lights help reduce their electricity needs. The savings from the new energy efficient lighting will also end up paying for itself as well.

Berkeley Electric Cooperative supports solar PV when it is a wise investment for its members. Berkeley Electric leads cooperatives statewide with its solar net metering program. The total output of PV systems that are completed (or under construction) is 4,000 kW or around 16,000 solar panels.

Although Berkeley Electric does not install solar PV systems, the Cooperative urges members to have their solar system proposals reviewed by our Energy Experts. They will help ensure that the home is energy efficient and that the proposal meets the needs of the member.
