Stephanie Kelley named executive director for Mount Pleasant nonprofit

Stephanie Kelley has been appointed as the next Executive Director for East Cooper Community Outreach.

Mount Pleasant, SC: East Cooper Community Outreach (ECCO) is pleased to announce and welcome Stephanie McNulty Kelley as the organization’s next Executive Director. A long-time ECCO volunteer and former Board member, Kelley has more than twenty years of experience working in higher education, demonstrated success in organizational leadership, a strong portfolio of consulting projects, and a lifelong dedication to community service.

Kelley will join the staff on March 6, succeeding Jack Little who stepped down in late October after leading ECCO for almost eleven years.

Within weeks of posting the position, more than 100 applications were submitted. The search committee conducted in-person interviews and brought finalists to present at ECCO’s full Board meeting in February. Giff Daughtridge, President of the Board, said “This is tremendous for ECCO. Stephanie is already knowledgeable and passionate about ECCO, and holds a master’s degree in counseling with decades of real world leadership and mentoring experience. She has already held important, responsible positions promoting ECCO’s mission and has a record of success. This is an exciting time for ECCO!”

Raised in Pennsylvania just outside Harrisburg, Stephanie Kelley is the oldest of three children and a first-generation college graduate. Her career in higher education began at Ursinus College where she specialized in student life. Kelley later worked at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland, until she was called back to Ursinus as Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Residence Life. In 2003, Kelley moved to South Carolina to work for Columbia College as the Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Residence Life, and shortly thereafter was promoted to Dean of Students, a position she held for six years.

After moving to the Charleston area in 2011, Kelley was eager to start giving back in her new community and immediately joined ECCO as a volunteer. She was first involved with the women’s empowerment series at ECCO and worked with Getting Ahead program participants and graduates. Kelley then served on the Development Committee and has since remained an active fundraising force and community advocate for the organization. As Chair of ECCO’s annual Golf Ball fundraiser for the last three years, Stephanie has led more than forty volunteers in the planning and execution of the Golf Tournament and Gala, increasing net revenue by more than 34%. Stephanie is a member of Christ Our King Catholic Church, led by ECCO’s founder, Monsignor James A. Carter, and lives in Mount Pleasant with her husband, Hoyt.

As my involvement with ECCO has grown, so has my respect for the work being done to support our neighbors in need. What greater privilege than to empower and be of service to those around us?"

Kelley was honored by ECCO this fall as the organization’s 2016 Volunteer of the Year. She remains dedicated to giving back and strives to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Founded in 1989 as an emergency relief effort after the devastation from Hurricane Hugo, East Cooper Community Outreach (ECCO) strives to eliminate poverty in the East Cooper region by offering programs in three main areas: Basic Needs, Health Services, and Empowerment.
