6th Annual Hike for Mike

The Lonon Foundation, a Charleston nonprofit that provides resources to children affected by their parent or caregiver's cancer diagnosis, will help raise funds and awareness at their annual fundraising event, Hike for Mike. The Hike for Mike is also in honor of Michael Lonon, a native South Carolinian and Lowcountry resident who lost his battle to cancer, leaving behind his wife and two small children. This event honors those like Mike who are battling cancer or who have lost their battle and have children impacted by these experiences.

Co-sponsored by MUSC Hollings Cancer Center for the third year in a row, the Hike for Mike will be held at Palmetto Islands County Park in Mount Pleasant on Saturday, October 1st, 2022, from 12-4 PM. This family-friendly event will include family yoga, mindfulness sessions, a gratitude scavenger hunt, a photo booth sponsored by Balloon Therapy and G-Local Media, kid’s arts and crafts sponsored by College of Charleston’s UPLIFT Club, food from Chow Bella and Area 51, live music throughout the day, and much more. Additionally, the Altered Alchemist and Mr. Narwhal’s Magnificent Snoballs will be on hand to provide specialty items for adults and kids alike.

Children 12 and under get in free, and the first 75 children receive a Wonder Works-sponsored goodie bag.

“Every year this event gets better, and every year we reach more families who need our resources,” said founder, Anna Lonon. “We are honored to be able to continue Mike’s legacy this way and to provide psychosocial support to children during what is likely the most difficult time in their young life. We know that we cannot change what they are going to, but we are hopeful that our resources can make it more bearable.”

Over the last six years, The Lonon Foundation has served families from across the Lowcountry in various stages of a parent or caregiver’s diagnosis and treatment. All proceeds from the event will support these families and go towards the organization’s monthly UPLIFT program and other local resources, including their mini grant program and hospital resource kits.

The Hike for Mike will also feature a raffle, with items from Lowcountry businesses like Hall’s Chophouse, Finicky Filly, Hampden, SC Aquarium, Abide-A-While, Stingrays Hockey, Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry, Atlanta Braves, Coastal Expeditions, The Alley, Barre3, Juve Salon, and more.

Admission is $25 and includes one free adult t-shirt. UPLIFT families get into the event for free.
