Norfolk, VA, and Orangeburg SC – November 21, 2021 – Ishpi Information Technologies, Inc., a forward-leaning Defense and Federal Cyber and Information Dominance (ID) company, recently announced that the company achieved a significant milestone in its long-term commitment to solve the cybersecurity skills shortage and to increase the participation of women, minorities, and veterans in high wage, high technology IT and Cybersecurity occupations.
ISHPI is collaborating with South Carolina State University , one of the premiere HBCUs in the nation, Integer Technologies LLC, a Columbia based provider of solutions to urgent national security needs, and the Urban Institute, a thought leader in workforce development and apprenticeships, to design, launch and implement degree apprenticeship career pathways in IT and cybersecurity occupations which are in high demand in South Carolina as well as nationally.
We are announcing that Benedict College, and Voorhees College have signed Memorandum of Understanding to join the SC HBCU Consortium. The initiative is supported by Urban as an innovation pilot under the terms of Urban’s Apprenticeship Modernization and Enhancement Initiative grant from the U.S. Department of Labor.
The SC HBCU consortium pilot will bring together senior executives from HBCUs, South Carolina employers, federal and local government, and regional economic development agencies to begin filling the large number of IT and cybersecurity job openings in the state with readily employable graduates of the HBCU Consortium.
Girish Seshagiri, Director, Board of Directors, Ishpi Information Technologies Inc, said “This is a significant milestone in our national goal to increase the participation of women, minorities, and veterans in high wage, high technology IT and Cybersecurity occupations by launching degree apprenticeships at scale. I am optimistic that employers in South Carolina and nationally will take advantage of the opportunity to recruit highly skilled and readily employable women, minorities and veterans who are graduates of the SC HBCU Consortium.”
“South Carolina State University is glad to be part of this innovative and one-of-a-kind program,” said Nikunja Swain, chair of the Computer Science and Mathematics Department at South Carolina State University. “This competency-based degree apprenticeship program will enhance the theoretical knowledge and skills of our HBCU computing graduates with much needed practical experience working with the employers, getting financial help while continuing with their program of study, and increase the possibility of getting hired after completion of degree. This project will help us to produce a robust pipeline of skilled professionals to address the information technology/systems and cybersecurity requirements of employers, including federal agencies.”
“Students of color face systemic barriers to entering the cybersecurity field,” said Diana Elliott, principal research associate at the Urban Institute. “This innovative degree-based registered apprenticeship program at HBCUs will help develop highly skilled workers and launch successful, well-paying careers in a field with great demand for talent.”
