American Heart Association Announces New Executive Director

The American Heart Association (AHA) is proud to announce that Katie Schumacher will be the Charleston office’s Executive Director. Schumacher will focus on overseeing and managing AHA fundraisers, working with our board and Executive Leadership teams, and actively engaging with community members to reduce health disparities in the Charleston tri-county area.

“I’m so excited to be part of this amazing organization as we work to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives. I understand that not only the incredible impact the Association has on this community, but also the outstanding support this community provides to its lifesaving work,” says Schumacher. “Right now, we are funding more than $4.5 million in research in Charleston, thanks to our incredible volunteers. I look forward to the many great things to come.”

Schumacher has been in the Charleston area for over 15 years now. She started her career in non-profit as a Community Director with the March of Dimes and was later promoted to Executive Director of the Charleston/Hilton Head office. From there she worked as a sales account manager for Blackbaud.

Then she joined the American Heart Association as a Heart Walk Director, after almost 6 years in that role, she was offered an opportunity at MUSC. At MUSC, she was a Major Gifts Officer for the Heart & Vascular Center and worked primarily with individual donors. Last January, the American Heart Association offered her a position to join the Mission Advancement team to work with individual donors in SC and NC.

The American Heart Association accepts donations throughout the entire year. You can fund our lifesaving mission by supporting customized sponsorships that are centered around blood pressure, CPR initiatives, workplace wellness programs, and many more. You can also sponsor our heart-healthy events: the Lowcountry Heart Walk, Charleston Heart Ball and the Go Red For Women luncheon.
