Bringing More Good Days through Respite Care Charleston

When Susan Lovelace and her husband Greg began to notice changes in her mother’s mental status several years ago, they reached out to Respite Care Charleston for help. “When we first got here, we had no idea what we were facing. Thankfully, people told us what we needed to do to prepare for the future and gave us a sympathetic ear. They knew where we were coming from,” she recalled.

At the encouragement of other caregivers in a RCC caregiver support group, Susan began bringing her mother, Pam, to Respite Care’s day program, soon increasing from one day a week to five. “My mom enjoyed the activities and being around other people, and we felt better about her care. She had a place to go where she’d have a good day, then be relaxed in the afternoon so we could have a good evening.”

For more than twenty years, Respite Care Charleston has provided support and care to thousands of families in our community who are living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia – families like the Lovelace’s who said, “Respite Care has been a lifeline for us and for my mother.”

As a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, RCC is dedicated to serving every family in need, turning no one away due to financial hardship. Our half-day respite programs provide a break for caregivers, and offer participants mental stimulation, light exercise and art and music therapies in a social setting purposefully designed to bring joy to those living with cognitive loss. Although our actual cost for a respite care visit is more than $72 per person, we charge just $40 per day – much less than in-home care. To keep rates affordable and provide scholarships to ensure no one is turned away due to inability to pay, we rely upon the gifts of friends like you who understand the challenges of living with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

To continue to provide accessible support to the families we serve, Respite Care Charleston needs your help.
