MURRELLS INLET, S.C.  – Brookgreen Gardens, a National Historic Landmark, is pleased to announce the election of two new members to the Board of Trustees. Joining the board are Catherine-Alexa “C.A.” Spivey Rountree and Julian “Jay” J. Nexsen, Jr.

“We are privileged to have an accomplished group of trustees to help guide Brookgreen to its next level of advancement,” says Page Kiniry, President and CEO of Brookgreen. “C.A. Spivey Rountree and Julian J. Nexsen, Jr. are a wonderful addition to the group that aids Brookgreen by overseeing strategic planning and providing oversight and accountability.”

C.A. Spivey Rountree is a South Carolina native from a family with generations of state and community leadership whose presence in Horry and Georgetown Counties stretches back almost three centuries. Through study and travel, she has cultivated a life-long love of art, literature, astronomy, biological sciences, and horticulture as well as a keen interest in environmental preservation. She is an alumna of the University of Massachusetts, Stanford University, Clemson University, and the Alliance Française, and she is a member of Mensa. In 2018, she was involved in the conception and creation of Lani’s Garden at Brookgreen which serves as an enduring memorial to her mother. She is a long-standing member of the Board of Directors of Spivey Holdings, LLC, and dedicates the rest of her time to her family, home, garden, two corgis, and 63 house plants. C.A. and her husband, Daniel Rountree, along with their two daughters, Cousteau and Kepler, split their time between Myrtle Beach, Charlotte, and Alexandria, Va.

Jay Nexsen

Julian J. Nexsen, Jr., a native of Columbia, S.C., is the retired President and CEO of Greenwood Communities and Resorts, a developer and operator of resort communities in the southwest. Jay graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1976 and the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1979. He currently serves on the boards of TCB Corporation, CountyBank, Greenwood Genetic Center, Greenwood Genetic Center Foundation, and the First Presbyterian Church Endowment. He previously served on the boards of Presbyterian Communities of S.C., and the S.C. State Museum, the University of S.C. Alumni Association, and the Self Regional Healthcare. He and his wife, Christy, have three children and currently split their time between DeBordieu and Greenwood.
