David Dobry has joined the Charleston Area Small Business Development Center (SBDC) as a Business Consultant, specializing in Government Contracting. He will provide his expertise and resources to entrepreneurs interested in bidding on government contracts.
For 23 years, Dobry has supported the Naval Information Warfare Command (NIWC, formerly SPAWAR LANT), US Army, Department of Justice, HUD and the VA as an Aerospace and Defense Engineer, Program and Project Manager and Systems Architect. He is recognized as a long-time local advocate for small business.
“I’m really excited to continue supporting new and existing entrepreneurs interested in government work,” said Dobry. “From startups to established businesses, I’ve been doing this in an ‘unofficial’ or volunteer capacity for years. It’s a dream come true for me. Government work is a great way to start, sustain and grow. The government recognizes their inherent agility and ability to innovate. Put the two together, and watch amazing things happen!”
A 12-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, Dobry brings a wealth of experience as the former VP of Operations for L-3 Communications. He was responsible for a 300+ employee operation generating over $38M in annual revenue, while successfully mentoring over 300 small business partners over 14 years. Dobry established Charleston offices for Imagine One Technology & Management, Ltd., and Spry Methods, Inc., both of which continue to be successful small businesses supporting NIWC.
Dobry served on the Board of Directors of the Charleston Defense Contractor’s Association (CDCA) for 7 years. As the CDCA Small Business Committee Chair, he founded the highly successful CDCA Small Business and Industry Outreach Initiative (SBIOI), which introduced over 400 small businesses to NIWC.
He also served as the Co-Chair and production lead of the CDCA Government/Industry Partnership Summit for 10 years. It is now the largest Defense Summit on the east coast.
“Dave’s experience will benefit the small business owners he will guide through the government contracting process,” said Darrell Jones, Regional Director of the USC Region of the SC SBDC. “His comprehensive background and specialized skill set will contribute to the SBDC tremendously.”
In 2018, the SC SBDC has helped over 5,000 entrepreneurs create and retain more than 996 jobs; start 188 new business ventures; create $56 million in capital formation; and secure more than $62.4 million in government contracts.
