Charleston Metro Chamber Releases Most Recent Industrial Wage and Benefits Results

Charleston, SC - The Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce and its Center for Business Research (CBR) announce the release of the 2017 Charleston Region SC Industrial Sector Wage and Benefits Survey results, which the CBR conducted in the fall of 2017. The result is a study of benefit and compensation practices among manufacturing and logistics employers in the three county Charleston region (Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester).

The CBR has conducted a benefits study biennially in various formats since 1997. Jacki Renegar, Director of the Center for Business Research at the Chamber states, “The objective of the study is to provide benchmarks for strategic planning purposes while helping organizations evaluate their compensation plans more effectively.”

The survey was administered online, with a total of more than 14,000 employees in the region represented at the 40 companies participating in the study. In total, there are approximately 37,000 employees in the manufacturing and logistics sectors of the Charleston Metro Area.

Study participants were asked about numerous topics including their company’s top challenges with regard to workforce. The number one reason indicated by nearly 60 percent of respondents was related to today’s tighter labor market nationwide-- “lack of or too few applicants.” At the core of the Chamber is the commitment to ensuring that current and future generations have career opportunities in our region by enhancing the quantity and quality of the talent in the Charleston metro through our Talent Pipeline.

Other topics covered in the study include paid time off, shift differentials, pre-employment evaluation methods and other hiring and compensation practices, plus wage rates for specific selected production, engineering, logistics and information technology occupations.
