Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry to Reopen following Renovations

Charleston, S.C., February 25, 2019 – The Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry is set to reopen to the public after an eight week renovation. The museum, closed since January, will open on Saturday, March 2 at 9 a.m. During the temporary closure, the museum has been operating a pop-up in the Citadel Mall, which will close on Tuesday, February 26 at 5 p.m. This project is the first phase of exciting changes coming to the museum.

“We strive to provide an atmosphere that engages children and we are happy to provide a safer and cleaner environment to welcome children and families,” says Nichole Myles, executive director of the museum. “These renovations are just one step in a larger plan to provide the best experience for families, and we were so pleased to be able to provide the temporary space during this necessary closure.”

The renovation included deferred maintenance projects totaling $550,000. Visitors to the museum will notice aesthetic updates to the interior of the existing structure: the bathrooms have been made-over, the ceiling has been encapsulated, new HVAC systems have been installed throughout the building and roof and door repairs were also completed. Also, the shed in the museum’s backyard has been removed as the first step in a makeover. Updates and renovations to the backyard will continue throughout the spring.

Since January 15th, nearly 6,000 people visited the museum’s temporary pop-up location in Citadel Mall.

“We received overwhelmingly positive feedback on our Citadel Mall pop-up,” says Myles. “Even though we are closing the pop-up we want the public to know: we hear you and we are exploring our options for the future. Until then we are excited to welcome Lowcountry families back to our downtown location.”
