Committee recommends adding algebra program to Lowcountry schools

North Charleston, SC – The four school superintendents in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties requested that the Math Pathways Project Team (MPPT), a group of math professionals at the high school and college level supported by Tri-County Cradle to Career Collaborative, evaluate Algebra Nation for implementation locally.

Algebra Nation created by the Lastinger Institute (University of Florida) is an online instructional tool kit that contains videos, a workbook, an online diagnostic tool as well as an interactive online ‘wall’ where students can ask questions of qualified Algebra teachers.  The program provides video tutorials that can be modified to conform with State standards and district practices, and then used as supplemental course material.

After careful consideration, MPPT has formally recommended that the four districts in the tri-county area work with The Lastinger Institute to bring Algebra Nation to the Lowcountry.  MPPT further recommends that the South Carolina Department of Education give serious consideration to a State-wide initiative and that the school districts in the Low Country be available to serve as a pilot site.

“Evidence provided by state assessments, end of course exams and college placement tests strongly suggests that tri-county students need additional support for understanding and retaining algebraic math,” said Geoff Schuler, convener of the Math Pathways Project Team.  “Algebra Nation is being used in Florida and other states, and we are pleased that the superintendents see the need for such a program in the Lowcountry.”
