After a thorough search process, Dorchester County Community Outreach (DCCO) recently announced Virginia “Ginny” Vicini as its new executive director.
Vicini, who took the helm at DCCO on July 11, comes to Summerville from Lexington, Kentucky. She has extensive experience working in the fields of substance abuse, mental health, individual and family homelessness, juvenile justice, service to veterans and family reunification. “Throughout my career I have developed a passion to implement programs not only through services, but through systems that demonstrate respect, compassion, and love for all individuals, no matter their circumstances,” said Vicini. She recognizes the necessity for communities to respond to the suffering of others and to share their time, empathy and resources in doing so.
DCCO’s board expressed its support for Vicini’s background and vision for the organization. “After a long and extensive nationwide search we are looking forward to having her expertise and experience as we continue to serve those experiencing homelessness,” said Joseph Friday, DCCO Board President.
Vicini is elated to be a part of DCCO and embraces its mission and the vision that is soon to be expanding. “I believe this opportunity is a gift and calling to serve where I can share my faith, hope, and love for those with whom I am working,” she said. While she takes pride in her Kentucky roots, having grown up in the coal region of Appalachia, she is thrilled to be near her twin daughters who both relocated to the South Carolina Lowcountry.
DCCO, founded in 2015, exists to provide a safe environment, support services, and an avenue to independence for those in a housing crisis. The organization operates two community outreach shelters, Home of Hope and Hope’s House, located in Summerville. As the area’s population grows, DCCO will expand its outreach efforts to meet the needs of local men and women experiencing homelessness.
DCCO invites the community to meet Vicini and other staff members at its upcoming fundraiser, P.R.O.M. (Providing Resources of Mercy), on Friday, Aug. 12 at St. Paul's Anglican, Doar Hall. P.R.O.M., which celebrates its fifth year in 2022, is DCCO’s largest annual fundraising event. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at https://dcco4homeless.org/p-r-o-m/.
