Dorchester County to Host E-Waste Recycling Event on Saturday, December 8, 2018

ST. GEORGE, SC (November 30, 2018) – Dorchester County is encouraging residents who took advantage of Black Friday and Cyber Monday savings to properly dispose of old/unwanted electronics.

To make it easier, Dorchester County is hosting an E-Waste recycling event on Saturday, December 8, 2018, from 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM at the St. George Convenience Site located at 5365 Memorial Blvd. in St. George and the Hwy 61 Convenience Site located at 1344 Beech Hill Road, Summerville.

Detailed directions to the Convenience Sites are available via an interactive map on the Dorchester County website.

Unwanted electronics are one of the nation's fastest growing waste streams. Often called e-waste, electronics contain potentially hazardous material such as lead and mercury that can pose a risk to human health and the environment if not properly managed.

Electronics also contain valuable material such as precious metals that can be recovered through responsible recycling. The recycling of electronics, beyond protecting the environment and conserving resources, also provides the raw material for recycling businesses and creates jobs.

South Carolina passed legislation in 2010 that banned the disposal of specific electronics in solid waste landfills effective July 1, 2011. One key component of the legislation requires residents to recycle computers, computer monitors, printers and televisions. Specifically, the legislation states that residents "may not knowingly place or discard" a computer, computer monitor, printer, and television "in any waste stream that is to be disposed of in a solid waste landfill."

The following items may be disposed of at the Highway 61 Convenience Site and/or the St. George Convenience Site:

• Televisions
• Computers
• Christmas Lights
• Gaming Consoles
• Telephones
• Answering Machines
• Stereos
• Alarm Clocks
• Printers
• Remotes
• Earbuds
• Small Appliances
• Vacuum Cleaners etc.
