The Lowcountry’s Dragon Boat Charleston team has made history in international competition. In Szeged, Hungary the team won a gold medal in the first All Cancer Survivor Division International Club Crew Championships. In early July, a team of 46 breast cancer survivors left Charleston to compete in international races in Italy and Hungary. Trident Medical Center’s Alice Turner, a 17-year breast cancer survivor and 12-year Dragon Boat Charleston team member, said it’s been one of the most fulfilling events in her life and the life of her teammates. This isn’t the first time the team has competed abroad. Three years ago, the Dragon Boat Charleston team won silver and bronze medals in Australia.
