East Cooper Community Outreach Receives $8,000 Grant From Sisters of Charity Foundation of SCFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Mount Pleasant, South Carolina (December 20, 2019): East Cooper Community Outreach (ECCO) announces it has been awarded an $8,000 grant from The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina to meet the needs of people experiencing poverty and support ECCO’s overall mission to provide safety net services to their low-income neighbors, while empowering them to create a better future for themselves, their families, and our community.

Since 1996, The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina exists to support the work of nonprofits in our state who ease the burdens faced by families and individuals experiencing poverty. From organizations who are zeroing in on root causes of poverty to those who are meeting the immediate needs of families enduring the consequences of poverty, The Sisters of Charity Foundation strives to help those who are helping others. Through their grant making, capacity building, leadership development and advocacy, they are committed to partnering with nonprofits who are working to decrease poverty in South Carolina.

“The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina is inspired by the recipients of the 2019 Fall Caritas Grant. These nonprofits use grant funding to address immediate needs and enhance people’s lives across our great state,” said Tom Keith, president of Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina. “By being knowledgeable about their communities, our grantee partners are able to provide valuable services. They’re also examples of good to the rest of us.”

Founded as an emergency relief effort in 1989 after the devastation from Hurricane Hugo, East Cooper Community Outreach (ECCO) has since grown into a permanent resource for the community in need with three main program areas: Basic Needs, Health Services and Empowerment. Thousands of families each year receive emergency assistance for food, clothing, household furnishings, financial aid, and have access to dental care, medical care, prescription assistance, counseling, and educational opportunities including financial literacy classes, computer skills training, and job readiness workshops. These services are all enhanced through personal interaction with staff who provide individualized support for each client, ongoing case management, and emphasize accountability and achievement.

ECCO is uniquely positioned in the area as the only organization in East Cooper, and one of only a few agencies in the greater Charleston region, that provides comprehensive wrap-around support services to low-income households. With ECCO’s holistic program approach, the organization is considered a “one-stop shop” for families in financial distress to get help filling a wide range of individual needs.
