Pinewood would not be where it is today without the leadership from Dr. David Price. His most significant impact on Pinewood was in 1980 when he was the Board Chair of Pinewood School (est. 1952). In conjunction with his counterpart at The Summerville Academy, Dr. Price led the effort to merge the two institutions and ultimately form what is known today as Pinewood Preparatory School. Dr. Price spent decades dedicating his time and talent to make Pinewood a success. In 2017, he was honored as the first Chair Emeritus of the Pinewood Board of Directors. Thanks to Dr. Price’s dedication and vision, Pinewood is still here, and our school and students are thriving. To this day, Dr. Price serves as a trustee emeritus for Pinewood and still offers exceptional advice and guidance.

Dr. Price’s children, Alicia Price Duffy and Thomas Price, attended Pinewood through the highest available grades offered at that time. Throughout their childhoods, Dr. Price often spoke highly of the exceptional educational opportunities his parents provided to him and considered education to be the most important gift he could give to his children.

Alicia fondly notes, “As I grew up, I began to notice he was equally committed to improving the educational offerings for everyone’s children. He assisted with the search effort for the new head of school, served as co-chair of the board for the first year, and even publicly advocated for Dorchester District 2’s bond support via newspaper advertisements. It was evident he wanted the best for every young person in Summerville.”

In 2018, Thomas presented the Alumni Pledge at Pinewood’s Awards Night, and he noticed none of the scholarships focused on science or medicine. Afterwards, Thomas and Alicia could not think of a better way to honor all their father has done for them and for Pinewood than to start a scholarship in his honor. The Dr. William David Price Scholarship recognizes an exceptional student in the junior class who wishes to pursue a career in science or medicine in college.

To further the Prices’ commitment to Pinewood, the Price children have recently pledged to endow the scholarship to honor their father in perpetuity at Pinewood.

When Thomas and Alicia started college, Dr. Price encouraged his children to take every class that looked interesting to them. He encouraged them to follow their passion and told them that an education in any field was valuable and would serve them well in their careers. Their hope is that as these amazing young minds continue their top-notch education the students will be inspired to continue on to become doctors or scientists. They also hope to inspire them to give back in some small (or potentially grand!) way when they achieve their own professional success.

The Price family firmly believes that Pinewood is a family, and as such, have a vested interest in helping the next generation accomplish more than the generations that preceded them all while honoring the path their father paved for them since the beginning.
