Heart Math Tutoring Expands to Charleston and Seeks Volunteers in 2022

Heart Math Tutoring (“Heart”), a volunteer-delivered math tutoring program, is expanding to the Charleston-area in January 2022. Heart Math Tutoring is a Charlotte, NC-based nonprofit that gives young students successful experiences in math through one-on-one tutoring during the school day delivered by supervised volunteers.

After 8 years growing the program in Charlotte to serve 20+ schools and more than 1,000 students, the nonprofit is expanding to reach students outside of Charlotte for the first time - starting with Ladson Elementary. A group of Charleston-based nonprofits and philanthropists are working to replicate the model in the Charleston region, where no math support exists at scale yet. In 2021, only 51% of fourth graders met or exceeded expectations on South Carolina College and Career Ready Assessments (SC READY) in mathematics. Tutoring has been found to deliver significant gains in rigorous, recent studies (Pellegrini M. 2018, Nickow A. 2020, Guryan J. 2021) and was recommended in the January 2021 report by the SC Education Oversight Committee (EOC).

The pilot program seeks to match 30 students with tutors from January – April 2022 in Charleston County School District’s Ladson Elementary.

Heart Math Tutoring is looking for 40 volunteers to tutor at Ladson Elementary at 7:45AM or 12:40PM any day Mon -Thursday starting in January. Heart Math Tutoring volunteers commit to weekly tutoring sessions that last either 30 minutes or one hour. Math does not have to be a strong subject for volunteers because Heart provides a structured elementary-level curriculum that features hands-on activities and math games. If you can count, you can be a tutor! A Heart Math Tutoring staff member is available on-site during tutoring sessions to make sure tutors have what they need. As a volunteer tutor with Heart Math Tutoring, your addition makes a difference! To date, 98% of over 3,500 students served in our in-person tutoring model have shown growth on pre/post assessments that meets the targets set by elementary math specialists at University of North Carolina-Charlotte and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Over 90% of teachers report that student confidence and/or enthusiasm towards academics increases because of Heart Math Tutoring.
