The Honorable John E. Waites, United States Bankruptcy Judge for the District of South Carolina, was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy in a ceremony held on March 16, 2018. Judge Waites is the first Bankruptcy Judge in South Carolina to be awarded this honor. The American College of Bankruptcy is an honorary association of bankruptcy and insolvency professionals whose fellows include bankruptcy judges, attorneys, and other practitioners in the bankruptcy and insolvency community. Those selected as Fellows demonstrate the highest standards of professionalism, ethics, character, integrity, professional expertise, leadership, and scholarship contributing to the enhancement of the insolvency field.
Judge Waites was appointed as a United States Bankruptcy Judge for the District of South Carolina on June 27, 1994, and has served continuously since that date, being reappointed in 2008. He served as the District’s Chief Bankruptcy Judge from March 1, 2006 until March 1, 2013.
In October 2018, Judge Waites will become President of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges (NCBJ), which represents over 350 bankruptcy judges nationwide. Judge Waites presently serves on the Executive Committee of the NCBJ as President Elect. In addition, Judge Waites was appointed by the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court to serve as a member of the Judicial Conference Committee on the Administration of the Bankruptcy System in 2013 and again in 2016. He also has been an active member of the South Carolina Supreme Court’s Access to Justice Commission since its 2006 inception, and is a member of the South Carolina Bar’s Pro Bono Committee.
Judge Waites has been recognized by South Carolina Legal Services, the South Carolina Bar, and Legal Services Corporation for his leadership in promoting pro bono efforts and commitment to ensuring equal access to justice for South Carolina citizens. Judge Waites is a past recipient of the J. Bratton Davis Professionalism Award, the South Carolina Bankruptcy Law Association’s highest honor. Judge Waites is also a recipient of the U.S. District Court Judge Matthew J. Perry, Jr. Civility Award.
