Lowcountry Land Trust Protects Acreage in the Headwaters of the Port Royal Sound
Conservation Easement Made Possible by Georgia Peach Growers

CHARLESTON, S.C.—January 2, 2018—Lowcountry Land Trust (LLT) today announced the permanent protection of the 535-acre Wainwright Tract, located in the Broad-St. Helena Watershed.

“The water quality of our sensitive estuarine habitats, like the Port Royal Sound, is highly dependent upon land protection upstream,” commented Ashley Demosthenes, president and CEO, Lowcountry Land Trust. “We are grateful for the long-term vision of the owners to place their property under a conservation easement, protecting downstream water quality forever.”

Located in Allendale County, the Wainwright tract provides a diversity of natural habitats included pine and upland hardwood, forested wetlands, and open areas. The conservation easement encourages continued agriculture, forestry, recreation, and hunting use, while promoting biological diversity. This is the 31st property that Lowcountry Land Trust has protected in this watershed, bringing the total of protected acres to more than 6,600.

Wainwright is named for its owners the Wainwrights of Reynolds, Georgia. A commitment to the land runs deep for the four generations of this family of peach growers who also own Taylor Orchards in Georgia.
