LS3P congratulates Vice President and Principal Brian Wurst, FAIA, on his elevation to Fellowship in the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the organization’s highest member honor which recognizes exemplary contributions to the profession. In addition to his award-winning designs, Wurst, who joined LS3P in 2000, is best known for his unusual aptitude for communicating design ideas through the increasingly rare art and science of architectural drawing and sketches.

Wurst uses his skill to humanize the process of design, often with humor and a welcome irreverence which engages clients in the process of architecture in a visceral way. “When we draw, we offer a glimpse into something gritty, more fluid and frankly more authentic- in short, more human,” Wurst explains. “Because sketching is quick and erasable, a hand drawing feels like a work in progress and encourages the client and other team members to offer suggestions and throw out new ideas. When an idea doesn’t pan out, nothing replaces the satisfaction of balling up a trace-paper sketch and hearing the crinkling sound as we move to the next iteration. Design is, ostensibly, publishing and editing.”

LS3P’s Chief Practice Officer Katherine Peele, FAIA, sees Wurst as an invaluable part of the firm’s growth and success. “The impact of Brian’s talents extends far beyond beautiful renderings,” Peele notes. “His designs become real places that bring authenticity, value, and identity to their communities, and his passion, humor, and commitment to meaningful placemaking are contagious.”

Wurst’s notable work includes designs for Pacific Box and Crate in Charleston, SC; Wando High School Center for Advanced Studies and the Wando Mount Pleasant Library. A graduate of Clemson University with a Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Design and University of Pennsylvania with a Master of Architecture, Wurst is a frequent guest lecturer, guest professor, and design juror for students and emerging professionals and a mentor to colleagues at all career stages.
