MASKerade for Mental Illness – Conquering the Stigma

Please join us for our most important fundraiser of the year, our annual “MASKerade of Mental Illness - Conquering the Stigma”benefit on Saturday October 2, 2018. We promise you a great time with food, cocktails, music and a live auction hosted by Charleston’s own Tom Crawford from Low Country Live. This is an event you won't want to miss!

Gratefully, we are all beginning to acknowledge the toll that mental illness is having on our society. At TMI, we are working to introduce our local communities to mental health programs in an effort to demystify and conquer the stigma associated with mental illness. We are working with churches, community organizations and corporate entities to certify Mental Health First Aiders throughout the Low Country. And the Low Country needs our help.

According to Tri-county Health Landscape (2016), the ratio of mental health providers to population is

1 : 320 in Charleston County;
1 : 798 in Dorchester County; and
1 : 1,261 in Berkeley County.

This critical fundraiser provides resources for various mental health awareness initiatives to help close that gap in knowledge and access that is needed so very much. Funds raised will allow TMI to train community members in Mental Health First Aid - at a reduced cost or for free.

Mental Health First Aid is a public education program that introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental illnesses, builds understanding of their impact, and overviews common supports. This 8-hour course uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to offer initial help in a mental health crisis and connect persons to the appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help care.

TMI Counseling and Coaching believes that strong healthy families are the foundation of our society and that we all have a role to play in helping to minimize the impact of mental illness in our community. Mental Health First Aid®offers another tool toward removing stigma, recognizing potential mental health problems and rewarding help-seeking behaviors.

Imagine the future possibilities…
Let’s change our community together, one mind at a time!
