Trident Health President and CEO Christina Oh announces Melissa Camp, LPC has been named the director of clinical operations for the health system’s new mental health hospital, Live Oak Mental Health & Wellness. The 60-bed hospital is scheduled to open June 6, 2023. It will be South Carolina’s first mental health hospital in more than 30 years and will provide inpatient and outpatient care to adolescents (12+) and adults.

Camp has more than 20 years experience providing mental health services. She joins Live Oak Mental Health & Wellness from Colleton Medical Center, where she led the hospital’s behavioral health program.

Camp said, “Every person deserves to have access to exceptional mental health care when they need it. From the time I started my career, I have been passionate about advocating for individuals in need of mental health treatment. The Lowcountry is my home community and I am honored to be part of the team opening South Carolina’s first mental health hospital in more than three decades and bringing this valuable resource to my community.”
David Was, Chief Operating Officer of Live Oak Mental Health & Wellness, said Camp’s experience working with mental health providers throughout South Carolina is invaluable to caregivers and families seeking care for their loved ones.

“Melissa is well known throughout South Carolina as an advocate for high quality, compassionate mental health services,” said Was. “In addition to her work at Colleton Medical Center, she has served in leadership roles at the Charleston Dorchester Mental Health Center and has led post-critical incident seminars at the SC Department of Corrections. Her expertise will help ensure patients at Live Oak Mental Health & Wellness will receive personal and compassionate care by experienced caregivers.”

Camp earned her Master’s degree in Counseling at Webster University and her Bachelor’s degree at Charleston Southern University, where she double-majored in psychology and sociology. Among her certifications are Certified Public Manager by the South Carolina Department of Administration; Crisis Intervention Trainer by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and SITCON Trained Crisis Negotiator by the South Carolina Department of Corrections.
