New Major Gifts Help USS Yorktown Foundation Launch Scholarship Fund for
For Underserved JROTC Students Statewide
MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – The USS Yorktown Foundation announces the creation of a $50,000 need-based education fund for Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) and other student military organizations that will provide scholarships to the Flight Academy at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum. This new program was funded by a series of major gifts from individual donors.
The Patriots Point Flight Academy is a state-of-the-art and immersive facility onboard the USS Yorktown that utilizes flight technology in a real world mission experience. Students are exposed to STEM-based career possibilities while building leadership, critical thinking, communication and team building skills. Scholarship students will have the opportunity to participate in the “Take Flight to Your Future” commercial aviation program, a career and workforce development program funded by a $25,000 grant from American Airlines, designed to introduce the exciting and growing field of commercial aviation to underserved and diverse student populations. This immersive and cutting edge program is a powerful tool that engages and ignites students and exposes the array of career choices that are attainable and sustainable.
“The USS Yorktown Foundation is dedicated to giving underserved students the opportunity to experience the unique and powerful educational and leadership programs at Patriots Point,” said Executive Director Allison Hunt. “We couldn’t be more grateful for the support we’ve received from individuals, foundations and our corporate partners who understand the need for these programs.”
