CHARLESTON, SC – PURE Theatre is announcing their final show of Season 20, the southeast regional premiere of Compulsion: Or the House Behind by Rinne Groff. The show will run from April 20 – May 13 at the Cannon Street Arts Center (134 Cannon St, Charleston SC 29403).

Sid Silver is a man obsessed. When he learns about a young girl named Anne Frank and her extraordinary diary, Silver makes it his mission to ensure her tale is heard. But is the manuscript a work of art? A cultural treasure? Once publishers and producers get involved, it becomes “a very valuable product” — and his good intentions prove to be his undoing.

The show is directed by PURE Co-Founder and Artistic Director Sharon Graci and features Core Ensemble Members David Mandel, Camille Lowman and R.W. Smith.

Rinne Groff is a playwright and performer. Her plays and musicals have been produced by the Public Theater, Playwrights Horizons, Yale Rep, Berkeley Rep, Kansas City Rep, Trinity Rep, Actors Theatre of Louisville, the Women’s Project, PS122, Clubbed Thumb, Target Margin and Andy’s Summer Playhouse, among others in the United States and internationally. She is a founding member of the devised theater company Elevator Repair Service and wrote for season two of Showtime’s Weeds. Rinne is a recipient of a Whiting Writers Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Obie Award grant, a Rita and Burton Goldberg Playwriting Award and two NYSCA Individual Artist grants. She has been a fellow at the MacDowell Colony, the Cape Cod Theater Project, the Orchard Project, the Sundance Theatre Lab, the Australian National Playwrights Conference, the Perry Mansfield New Noises Festival and the Chautauqua Theater Company.

Tickets range from $30 to $45. There will be two Pay What You Will Performances on April 20 and 26. There are $10 student tickets available at the door before performances. There are also 10 $10 tickets available at the door for every show, even if online tickets are sold out. All tickets are first-come, first-served. Compulsion: Or the House Behind is also available through the All-Access Flex Pass, which includes tickets and reserved seats to every show along with a host of other benefits.
