The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art Announces Spandita Malik: Meshes of Resistance and Elisa Harkins: Teach Me a Song

The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston School of the Arts presents two new exhibitions, Spandita Malik: Meshes of Resistance and Elisa Harkins: Teach Me a Song, to be displayed April 5 through July 20.

Spandita Malik is a New York-based visual artist from India whose work is concerned with the current global socio-political state of affairs, emphasizing women’s rights and gendered violence. Malik’s exhibition Meshes of Resistance will feature work from her ongoing Jāḷī series, featuring photographs of women in India Malik has connected with through self-help centers for domestic and gender-based violence. Malik prints these portraits, created in the women’s homes and personal spaces, onto fabric specific to the region. The women then embroider their portraits in any way they choose, taking agency over their ultimate representation and artistically collaborating with Malik. Specializing in process-based photography, Malik’s work in expanded documentary and social practice emanates from the idea of decolonizing the eye and aesthetic surrounding documentary photography of India. With work exhibited worldwide, Malik was named ‘Ones to Watch 2020’ by the British Journal of Photography and has garnered several awards, including The 30: New and Emerging Photographers Award in 2022.

Elisa Harkins is an Oklahoma-based Cherokee/Muscogee Native American artist and composer whose work is concerned with translation, language preservation and Indigenous musicology, using the Cherokee and Mvskoke languages, electronic music, sculpture and the body as her tools. In collaboration with Crisp-Ellert Art Museum at Flagler College and The New Gallery at Austin Peay State University, Harkins will display her ongoing project Teach Me a Song for the first time in its entirety at the Halsey Institute, a multifaceted work structured on a series of exchanges wherein Harkins invites collaborators to teach her a song. With these song recordings, which may be ceremonial, religious, rock & roll, electronic, etc., Harkins’ practice of nation-to-nation sharing and trading music aims to decolonize the traditions of Indigenous musicology. In addition, the Halsey Institute is thrilled to co-present two performances of Harkins’s Wampum ᎠᏕᎳ ᏗᎦᎫᏗ with Spoleto Festival USA; purchase tickets HERE. Harkins’ work has notably been exhibited at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, documenta 14, Hammer Museum, Heard Museum and Vancouver Art Gallery.

The Halsey Institute will host an opening reception for the two new exhibitions on Friday, April 5 from 6:30-8 p.m. The event is open to the public and free to members; a $5 donation is suggested for all not yet-members upon entry. For a more in-depth look into the works, the Halsey will host free Artist Talk sessions with Malik on April 6 at 2 p.m. and Harkins on June 1 at 2 p.m.

“We are ecstatic to bring the work of Spandita Malik and Elisa Harkins to Charleston,” says Director & Chief Curator of the Halsey Institute Katie Hirsch. “Each exhibition features a stunning new body of work by these two rising artists. Together, Meshes of Resistance and Teach Me a Song reflect on structures of power and representation in highly collaborative projects. Malik and Harkins give such joyous respect to the individuals and cultures featured in the work. This results in two exhibitions that are not only visually beautiful but moving and broadening.”

Monteith Construction Corp. Adopts an Employee Stock Ownership Plan, Positions Company for Long-Term Growth, Team Success

Carolinas-Based Monteith Construction, Grey Interiors, and Citadel Masonry are now 100% Employee-Owned

WILMINGTON, NC (March 5, 2024): Monteith Construction Corp.—including the companies Monteith Construction and its wholly-owned subsidiaries Grey Interiors, and Citadel Masonry—today announces the adoption of an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), creating a strategic growth plan that directly reflects the company’s commitment to holistic team success.

“From day one, people have been central to our company purpose and growth, and for several years now, we have taken steps to make our company an employee-owned one,” says John Monteith, company founder and chairman. “We have always led with culture, so making Monteith a place where everyone shares in ownership is the natural next step in our evolution.”

“This is about putting ownership into the hands of the people who drive our success,” adds CEO and President Bryan Thomas. “Our team brings passion and grit to work each day, and the ESOP now provides a long-term, wealth-building benefit without changing any of our company values. We couldn’t be more excited for what the future holds.”

Established in 1998, Monteith has grown over the past 25 years to a 165-employee commercial construction business, building across North and South Carolina. The company has four established office locations in Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Raleigh, and Wilmington, and is opening a fifth location in Winston-Salem this Spring 2024.

With the ESOP adoption, 100% of Monteith’s current and future employees are eligible to participate and benefit from the plan.

Modern ESOPs are a result of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA). According to the National Center for Employee Ownership (NCEO), there are approximately 6,533 ESOPs in the United States, including a mix of private and public companies, and many of which fall within the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry.

Monteith’s project portfolio ranges across industries and asset classes—from higher education and healthcare to hospitality and multifamily/mixed use. Recent clients include Atlas Stark, Baker Motor Company, Brookfield Properties, Burroughs & Chapin, Cape Fear Development, Loden Properties, MegaCorp Logistics, North Carolina A&T State University, PulteGroup’s Del Webb active adult communities, UNC Health, UNC Wilmington, Wake Tech Community College, and Wilmington International Airport (ILM), among other private and public owner groups.

Don’t Let Termites Spring Into Your Home

COLUMBIA, S.C. – As spring heralds longer days and warmer climates, it also awakens a less welcome guest: termites. These pint-sized destroyers rack up a hefty $5 billion yearly in home repairs. National Termite Awareness Week, running from March 3-9 serves as a timely reminder, and Terminix Service, Inc. is empowering homeowners with proactive measures to safeguard their properties from termites, including the increasingly aggressive Formosan species rapidly spreading across the Carolinas.

“As the Carolinas continues to see a rapid influx of new residents, the importance of homeowner education increases,” said Terminix Technical Director Kevin Hathorne. “Our region harbors a variety of termites, including subterranean, drywood, and now Formosan subterranean termites are spreading into new areas. We’re committed to enlightening homeowners on how to make their property less attractive to these pests.”

Top 10 Tips to Terminate Termite Troubles: Terminix recommends these preventative measures, including:

1. Repair plumbing leaks.
2. Make sure gutters and downspouts are not clogged or damaged and are directing water away from the foundation. Install gutters if you don’t have them.
3. Point sprinklers away from your foundation.
4. Prevent pooling water next to your foundation by re-grading the soil so that water flows away from your house, or install a drainage system like a French drain.
5. Keep your roof in good shape and free of leaks.
6. Repair and replace damaged siding and flashing.
7. Store firewood, scrap lumber, or any other wooden products as far from your house as possible.
8. Do not use excessive mulch or pine straw around the foundation.
9. Trim any adjacent bushes and trees.
10. Ensure your crawl space has adequate ventilation and a moisture barrier or is encapsulated and conditioned like the Terminix Humidi-Seal system offers.

Locally-owned Terminix Service, Inc. provides a termite protection plan with the strongest guarantee in the business. For more information, visit www.trustterminix.com or call 1-800-Terminix.

Thirty years later, the non-profit 501c-3 organization has flourished with almost 200 members, who enjoy art classes, workshops, and demonstrations throughout the year by prominent artists. The SOBA gallery gives a home for experienced artists to exhibit their work, as well as for young artists who get to experience what it’s like to exhibit in a professional gallery and the thrill of selling their art. Over the years, SOBA has provided art programs at the Boys & Girls Club, sponsored trips to art museums throughout the state, funded scholarships to local college students pursuing art degrees and more.
