Joye also plans to connect with younger and older attorneys with targeted events. “We want to engage our newer attorneys and those who have practiced more than 50 years. Both groups are important members of our organization, and we want to show them that we appreciate them and are here to support them,” said Joye.

Spoleto Festival USA Awarded $25,000 Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts

CHARLESTON, S.C. —Spoleto Festival USA is pleased to announce it has been approved by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for a Grants for Arts Projects award of $25,000. This grant will support Spoleto’s new full-length chamber opera Ruinous Gods, which will premiere at the Festival on May 24, 2024. Tickets are available now at spoletousa.org.

“This original production directly serves our mission of presenting programs of the highest artistic caliber while uplifting diverse voices and stories,” says Mena Mark Hanna, general director and CEO of Spoleto Festival USA. “We are grateful that the NEA has chosen to support this remarkable world premiere opera and the continuing success of Spoleto Festival USA.”

Co-produced and co-commissioned by Spoleto Festival USA, Opera Wuppertal, and Nederlandse Reisopera, Ruinous Gods explores the trauma of refugee syndrome through an operatic dreamscape depicting resignation syndrome, a child’s psychological response to displacement. Grounded in testimonies from survivors and families of those afflicted with resignation syndrome, the evocative opera follows the experiences of a mother, Hannah, and her 12-year-old daughter, H’ala, who suffers from a traumatic response to the state of living in the limbo of displacement. Evident in refugee camps around the world, resignation syndrome causes the child, most often between the ages of 8 to 15, to fall into a non-responsive sleep.

“The NEA is delighted to announce this grant to Spoleto Festival USA, which is helping contribute to the strength and well-being of the arts sector and local community,” said National Endowment for the Arts Chair Maria Rosario Jackson, PhD. “We are pleased to be able to support this community and help create an environment where all people have the opportunity to live artful lives.”

In total, the NEA will award 958 Grants for Arts Projects awards totaling more than $27.1 million that were announced as part of its first round of fiscal year 2024 grants.

Global Water Center To Help India’s Clean Water Supply Through $349K Grant From The Coca-Cola Foundation

CHARLESTON, S.C. — In late October, the Global Water Center (GWC) was awarded a grant of $349,939 from The Coca-Cola Foundation to support the Solar Pumping Technical Assistance program in Karnataka, India. The project will train approximately 300 to 500 government engineers and consultants from the Rural Drinking Water and Sanitation Department (RDWSD) of Karnataka, India, in the sustainable design and management of Solar-Powered Water Systems (SPWS).

“Thanks to the generosity of The Coca-Cola Foundation, this training project will provide the government engineers the knowledge base they need to evaluate and design Solar Powered Pumping Systems that can be a viable option for providing the population of Karnataka with safe water,” said Dr. George Greene III, Executive Chairman of the Global Water Center. “The individuals participating in the training will be well-equipped to select appropriate locations for SPWS, and to design systems that comply with international design and performance standards. The individuals will also be connected to industry and partners who can provide ongoing support for successful SPWS implementation. We look forward to helping the government engineers obtain the knowledge and skills needed to provide the people of Karnataka sustainable access to safe water.”

Currently, 16.4 million people in Karnataka’s rural population still lack access to a safe and reliable household tap connection. The funding will be used to help the sixth largest state in India have safe and reliable water by providing training and ongoing technical support in SPWS to the state’s government, which has been working aggressively to improve access to safe water and sanitation. In addition to SPWS, the training will include a focus on groundwater management to emphasize the importance of designing systems that do not deplete this resource.

Typical rural water schemes in Karnataka, powered by electricity, provide users with water for 4-12 hours per day. The use of SPWS will support the goal of 24/7 continuous water supply, as it will supplement, and at times replace, the unreliable access to electricity from the grid. This will have several positive impacts, including a reduction in microbial contamination associated with water storage at the point of use, and a corresponding decrease in water-borne diseases associated with the water supply. Additionally, the move toward SPWS will contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) in Karnataka. According to the World Bank, GHGs associated with the energy usage by water pumps is estimated at 35,531 tons of CO2 annually. SPWS will reduce the reliance on electricity from the grid and improve systems’ financial sustainability, which is at risk due to the high cost of electricity associated with water provision and the resulting increase in the number of electric bills that are not paid. Investment in SPWS will reduce, and in some instances eliminate the costs associated with electricity.

At Global Water Center, we recognize firsthand the need for 2.2 billion people to access clean water. We believe The Coca-Cola Foundation’s grant will greatly aid Karnataka and accelerate the end of water poverty.

About Global Water Center

Global Water Center, in collaboration with Water Mission, CAWST, and UNICEF, has trained water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) professionals in over 67 countries in solar-powered water systems. The purpose of GWC is to serve the global WASH community to rapidly scale the world’s effort to bring safe water to everyone in need. Through collective action, training, and technical support, GWC drives accountability and adherence to standards, ensuring access to safe water for millions of people in low- and middle-income countries.

About The Coca-Cola Foundation

The Coca-Cola Foundation’s mission is to make a difference in communities around the world where The Coca-Cola Company operates and where our employees live and work. We support transformative ideas and institutions that address complex global challenges and that leave a measurable and lasting impact. Our giving is focused on sustainable access to safe water, climate resilience and disaster risk preparedness and response, circular economy, economic empowerment, and causes impacting our hometown community. Beloved Wildlife Inspires Local Wealth Management Firm

Local investment firm Vingi, Edwards and McCallum Private Wealth Management Group of Wells Fargo Advisors is rebranding under a new name inspired by beloved wildlife, the Roseate Spoonbill. As of today, the firm is launching its new brand, Roseate Group of Wells Fargo Advisors.

The 11-person practice is led by Robert E. Vingi, Jr., private wealth financial advisor; Wendy M. Brewer, private wealth financial advisor; David A. McCallum, private wealth financial advisor; Howard D. Edwards, Jr., senior financial advisor; and Aaron L. Barber, senior financial advisor.

“As our team grew with the additional of Wendy Brewer and Aaron Barber, it became obvious we needed a name that resonated with all of us,” said Vingi. “We like the fact that the Roseate is local and uncommon–like our practice.”

The Roseate Spoonbill is a gregarious wading bird of the Ibis and Spoonbill families. Plume hunting in the 18th and 19th centuries almost drove the species to extinction, yet decades of conservation have allowed the range of the Roseate to expand. Still, it is a rare sighting in the Lowcountry and always sparks awe and wonder when seen wading or in flight.”

Vingi, Edwards, and McCallum founded the team in 2008. Working with generations of families and business owners, the team helps clients work through the path from wealth creation to preservation and legacy with a special focus on senior planning.

In January, Roseate Group of Wells Fargo Advisors was recognized on Forbes’ 2024 Best-In-State Wealth Management Teams List.”
