Young Contemporaries 2023- Halsey

In collaboration with the Department of Studio Art at the College of Charleston (CofC), the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art is thrilled to present Young Contemporaries 2023, an annual exhibition of work in a variety of mediums from talented student artists. The exhibition will be on display from March 17-April 22, 2023.

Now in its 38th year, Young Contemporaries is a breakout opportunity for CofC students and recent graduates to showcase their emerging talents and have their art be displayed like that of professional artists. Following an open call for submissions and a thorough review and curation process, the work showcased each year is selected by a nationally prominent artist, critic or other arts professional. Young Contemporaries 2023 was juried by David Antonio Cruz whose work has been exhibited at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and El Museo del Barrio in New York.

A selection of works that were not chosen for Young Contemporaries – Salon des Refusés – will show concurrently in the exhibition space of the Cato Center for the Arts. The works in the Salon are chosen by Studio Art faculty. The origin of a Salon des Refusés dates to Paris in 1863, when artists who had been rejected from the official Salon caused such a protest that Emperor Napoleon III ordered another exhibition held for them.

Several generous awards will be presented to artists in both exhibitions during the Opening Reception and on the Institute’s Instagram.
