The Junior League of Charleston Helps Fight Childhood Hunger During the School Year
Charleston, SC – January 15, 2018 – The Junior League of Charleston is volunteering over the course of the 2018-19 school year at the Lowcountry Food Bank, whose mission is to lead the fight against hunger. The Junior League focuses their efforts at the Food Bank on the BackPack Buddies program, which helps alleviate weekend hunger for children who are at risk of food insecurity in Berkeley and Charleston counties.
The Junior League is volunteering nine times at the Food Bank during the school year, and will assemble 13,400 packs for children through April 2019. Between 15-25 Junior League volunteers participate in each packing session. The Junior League is also contributing $4,000 during the school year to support the Backpack Buddies program.
“We are so thankful to the Junior League of Charleston for helping feed so many children during the school year,” said Pat Walker, Lowcountry Food Bank President and CEO. “We know that children who have consistent access to nutritious food have higher grades, better attendance and improved behavior in school. We appreciate that the Junior League helps keep our kids focused on learning with nutritious food.”
The BackPack Buddies program meets the needs of food insecure children by providing them with nutritious and easy-to-prepare food to take home on weekends and school vacations when other resources are not available. The program operates in 52 schools and Lowcountry Food Bank partner sites throughout the 10 counties of coastal South Carolina, serving nearly 3,800 children every week during the school year.
