The BackPack Buddies program helps alleviate weekend hunger among food-insecure public school children by distributing backpacks full of nutritious and kid-friendly food each Friday during the school year. The Lowcountry Food Bank works closely with its partner schools to identify the most chronically food-insecure children.
"Dominion Energy's donation makes such a positive impact to alleviate childhood hunger in the Lowcountry," said Lowcountry Food Bank CEO and President Pat Walker. "The Lowcountry Food Bank distributed 153,036 packs to almost 4,000 children last year at 49 school sites," said Walker. "The BackPack Buddies program is integral to our mission of alleviating childhood hunger in coastal South Carolina."
Dominion Energy awards grants to nonprofit organizations across the company's footprint that meet critical community needs. These grants are designed to support organizations that provide greater stability and a better life for people in need. Priority is given to organizations that
meet basic human needs, protect the environment, promote education and encourage community vitality.
"Dominion Energy is committed to supporting community partners meeting basic human needs including shelter, medical care, and nutritious meals," said Kristen Beckham, external affairs representative for Dominion Energy. "By supporting the Lowcountry Food Bank's BackPack Buddies weekend hunger-relief program, we can help children get the nutrition they need to grow and thrive. It is wonderful to be able to support organizations that are improving lives and building greater stability in the places we call home."
