Columbia, South Carolina — The University of South Carolina’s Darla Moore School of Business will explore the state’s post-COVID economic recovery and the federal government’s response to record inflation levels at the 42nd Annual Economic Outlook Conference. The event, featuring state and national political and economic experts, will be from 11:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, at the Pastides Alumni Center.
The highest inflation levels in more than 40 years have limited consumer spending because prices are rising faster than wages. Labor and material costs are also rising, slowing business production. In response, the Federal Reserve has made aggressive interest rate hikes to slow demand and curtail inflation, which could trigger a recession.
The Economic Outlook Conference will address key questions about a potential recession and its impact on the U.S. and South Carolina economies:
• What is the likelihood of a recession and what would it look like?
• Are we headed for a hard crash or a soft landing?
• How long would a recession last?
• What would a recession mean for the stock market and housing prices?
• What leading economic indicators should we track?
• How would a recession affect the widespread global supply chain constraints and labor shortages?
The interactive event will include several Q&A sessions.
