Charleston—Two veteran fundraisers, Raymond Carnley and Jay Howard, were named senior consultants this week for the Winkler Group. Together, they have more than 50 years of experience leading capital campaigns and advancement offices for universities, nonprofit organizations, and independent schools.
Jay Howard, CFRE
Jay Howard has raised nearly $50 million for philanthropic causes during his career. His expertise lies in engaging boards and volunteers in capital campaigns and in strategic planning.
Mr. Howard has worked extensively with independent schools including the Webb School of Knoxville, Flint Hill School in Virginia, and The Meadows School in Nevada. Under his leadership, the Webb School realized the highest levels of voluntary support in its history. In addition to his experience with independent schools, Mr. Howard has led development operations for health care and arts organizations.
Mr. Howard is an active member of CASE and has presented at numerous CASE/NAIS conferences. He has served on the CASE Independent School Awards Committee as well as the Development and Marketing Committee of the American Association of Museums, CASE Commission on Philanthropy, and the CASE/NAIS Conference Planning Committee.
Jay is a past President of the Smoky Mountain Chapter of AFP. He is accredited as a Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE) and is a graduate of Sidwell Friends School (Washington DC) and The University of Richmond.
Raymond Carnley, Ed.D.
Throughout his 20-year career, Raymond Carnley has personally secured or directed more than $125 million in charitable giving. An accomplished fundraiser and philanthropic leader, Dr. Carnley specializes in the planning and implementation of capital campaigns.
Dr. Carnley began his career with Habitat for Humanity International, where he played an instrumental role in securing the organization’s largest gift to date. Most recently, he served as Vice President for University Advancement for Middle Georgia State University, where he secured the largest gift in the university’s history.
Dr. Carnley is a member of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, the Association of Fundraising Professionals, and the Georgia Education Advancement Council. He received his Ed.D. from the
University of Georgia’s Institute for Higher Education, an M.A. from Columbia College. and a B.A from Georgia Southwestern State University. He is also an Eagle Scout.

The Winkler Group was recently named fundraising counsel for the Ronald McDonald House Charleston, Drury University in Missouri, Harding Academy in Tennessee, Curry Ingram Academy in Nashville, Thrive SC in Charleston, Trinity School of Durham and Chapel Hill in North Carolina, and the Jud C. Hickey Center for Alzheimer’s Care in Georgia.
