The Palmetto Chapter of The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) #385, located in Charleston, SC, will be recognizing Women in Construction (WIC) Week March 3-9, 2019. NAWIC’s mission is to enhance the success of women in the construction industry.
Throughout the Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester County areas, we will focus on educating our youth to raise awareness and ignite interest in the many opportunities available in the construction industry. Through a unified effort, we hope to diminish the skilled labor shortage that currently exists and place emphasis on growing the female representation in the industry.
Our non-profit has grown from 49 members when chartered back in August of 2018 and now stands 69 members strong today. The need for our organization is evident and we hear that message loud and clear. WIC Week will help us bring together women who share a common passion, careers in construction. By highlighting women as a visible component of the construction industry, it is a chance for our local chapter to give back to the communities.
WIC Week is a national celebration that includes NAWIC’s thousands of members across the country to raise awareness of the opportunities available for women in the construction industry and strive for those currently employed to advance in their role and push beyond barriers. Our WIC Week activities include: multiple hard hat tours, an occupational safety relay social, an exhibit at STEM Fest, mock block kids building competition, construction-themed Jeopardy social, congressman address to our chapter regarding WIC Week featuring Joe Cunningham, a lunch and learn panel discussion regarding harassment in the world place, and a volunteer group for a Berkeley County Habitat for Humanity build site.
Event registration is open to the public to promote and continue our rapid membership growth.
